I just came across this NPR interview buried on one of my older hard-drives. LeeAnne Hansen on NPR’s “Weekend Edition”interviewed me as I discussed my latest project at the time, “Children On the Front Line”. Was it 1987? I was commissioned by UNICEF to travel on a three-month photographic mission to document the effect of apartheid on the children of the Southern Africa. UNICEF sent me me to the front line nations of Southern Africa, including Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
It was as a UNICEF officer described in an internal memo, “ not a bush or civil war but a full scale war of defense against external aggression by South Africa and its white terrorist proxy forces…”
Here’s the NPR interview:
…along with a few of the photos I could find on my hard drives. ( I really must do some organizing)

Here’s a portion of an internal memo sent at the time from the UNICEF director. It looks as if he sent this from the field using a portable typewriter. These were the pre-e-mail days after all. It never ceases to amaze me what you can find on the Internet if you use the correct search terms.
